Restoration of Native Ecosystems
نویسنده
چکیده
There is little published information on "nearnatural" ecosystems and their restoration. Ecosystem restoration involves the setting of a date to indicate a restoration point (e.g., 1778 for the National Park Service in Hawaii) and presupposes some knowledge of ecosystem status at the target date and time. In Hawaii, knowledge of past conditions is usually precluded by the rapidity and magnitude of recent changes. However, some restoration efforts based largely on removal of alien organisms have resulted in recovery of ecosystems that are largely native but lack components and processes destroyed in the past by alien organisms including man. No cost estimates for ecosystem restoration in Hawaii are available as yet. Efforts devoted to prevention of the degradation of prime examples of near-natural and natural Hawaiian ecosystems should at least be equal to restoration efforts.

متن کاملRestoration of Natural Forest Ecosystems: The Genetic Resource
Restoration of many forest ecosystems will require replanting of native species. Choosing the proper seed source is essential to ensure long-term success of restoration plantings, especially if local seed sources are unavailable or genetically degraded. A successful restoration requires seed sources that are adapted to the climate and site, and are genetically diverse to allow subsequent reprod...
متن کاملRestoration of urban waterways and vacant areas: the first steps toward sustainability.
Increased population pressure and human activities have significantly altered the effectiveness of functions of ecosystems ("ecosystem services") at the local and regional scale. Of primary importance is the decrease in water quality due to urban storm water runoff. A number of communities have initiated restoration strategies to improve water quality standards. One such strategy is the incorpo...
متن کاملIntegrating Regeneration, Genetic Resistance, and Timing of Intervention for the Long-Term Sustainability of Ecosystems Challenged by Non- Native Pests – a Novel Proactive Approach
Global trade increases the likelihood of introduction of non-native, invasive species which can threaten native species and their associated ecosystems. This has led to significant impacts to forested landscapes, including extensive tree mortality, shifts in ecosystem composition, and vulnerabilities to other stresses. With the increased appreciation of the importance of healthy ecosystems for ...

Non-native invasive plant species (NNIPS) pose a serious socio-ecological challenge due to their potential to replace and damage critical human-sustaining ecosystems (OTA 1993 ; Mack et al. 2000 ; Pimentel 2002 ) . The impacts of non-native species are widespread and signi fi cant—altering ecosystem structure and function, threatening other species, and imposing human economic and cultural cost...
